We are all familiar with the story of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:30-37). Jesus used this parable to demonstrate that it is our duty to help those in need no matter their social status, religious beliefs or nationality. It is this story that inspired Dr. Bob Pierce to begin the Samaritan’s Purse organization. Samaritan’s Purse heeds God’s call to aid the poor, sick and suffering around the world and to spread the message of salvation through Jesus Christ. Franklin Graham joined Dr. Pierce in this mission and is today the CEO and President.

The selfless efforts of this organization are always aimed at sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ. Those who are being helped know that all is being done in the Name of Christ and they are able to witness firsthand God’s boundless love. For over 40 years, emergency relief has been provided to victims’ of natural disasters and war. Destitute villages benefit from community development and vocational programs to help the citizens to rise above the stifling poverty.

In addition, medical programs are available and mission hospitals are furnished with much-needed equipment and supplies. Perhaps most importantly, children are ministered to with education, clothing, food and shelter. Jesus’ call to “Let the children come unto me” does not go unheeded as these precious children are ministered to.

One of the most successful programs that Samaritan’s Purse offers is the Operation Christmas Child program. This program accepts donations of gift wrapped shoe boxes filled with gifts and these shoeboxes are then delivered to children all over the world! Last year, over 7.9 million shoe boxes were delivered to children. Donors are allowed to pick the age and sex of the child that they wish to send a shoe box to and a donation can be made online to help cover the costs of shipping the shoe boxes. This is a wonderful service project for schools and churches to participate in and it gives children an opportunity to be part of a ministry and to be actively involved in making the lives other children better. It’s never too late to become a “Good Samaritan” and come to the aid of those around you who are hurting and in need. You don’t have to travel across the world to do it and Samaritan’s Purse makes it so easy to be a witness of God’s love and mercy.
